Carling Cup delivers four blockbuster Knockout fixtures in the last 8 of the Premier Soccer League competition this weekend.
Saturday | November 2, 2024
Billed as one of the colossal fixtures in South African sporting traditions, Kaizer Chiefs Football Club (FC) dust themselves up from a midweek scare to confront the crosstown rivals Mamelodi Sundowns FC.
The Carling Knockout Cup brings yet another monumental draw between Chiefs and Sundowns FC in the quarterfinals stage at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg today at 18h00.
Chiefs lost 2-1 to Sundowns in a league match just over a month at the same venue.Tonight, they come toe-to-toe once again but this time in a knockout tournament where there has to be a winner.
Both these Gauteng giants advanced from the last 16 with heavy scores. Amakhosi (Chiefs) trashed SuperSport United FC 4-0 while Sundowns pulverised Golden Arrows FC 5-0.
With these high scores from their previous rounds, today’s encounter should be a spellbinding affair.
Even so, Chiefs come to this tricky duel after surviving a scare in the league-match on Wednesday. They came from a 2-0 down to secure a point with a 2-2 draw.
Quite contrary, the Brazilians (Sundowns) won 3-0 in their midweek league match. It is not misplaced to state that they come into this Carling Cup buoyed by that emphatic victory.
Still, Amakhosi need to put up a brave face to emerge from near catastrophic results against the newly promoted side in the elite league.
Riding on the Wednesday momentum, the Brazilians’ are light on their shoulders and may fancy their chances in this regard.
Kaizer Chiefs are a big team and, for this reason, should find and plug the courage to rise to the occasion and give Mamelodi Sundowns a run for their money.
Although the Brazilians seem to be the favourites of this epic cup quest, it will be a typical cup quest battle between the two juggernaut of South African football.
