The big stage beckons for the South African Betway Premiership League 2024/2025 champions Mamelodi Sundowns FC in the prestigious continental highest honour on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
They go head-to-head with Pyramids FC from Egypt in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League final at 15h00, SAT.
Sundowns have the privilege of hosting the 1st-leg of the double-legged crowning jewel of Africa’s club grand tournament.
Meanwhile the South Africans have lifted this coveted trophy in 2016, Pyramis are yet to clinch it. Their trip to Pretoria is very historic as they seek to buck the trend and claim, for the very first time, this magnificent prime prize on African soil.
Pyramids defeated another South African giant Orlando Pirates (who won it in 1995) in the semifinals. And today, they face yet another fierce opponent in their journey to continental greatness.
On the other hand, Sundowns eliminated the 12-time champions Al Ahly Sporting Club (from Egypt) to reach the finals. The Brazilians [Sundowns] captain Themba Zwane said although they are wary of their rival, they are quite determined to pull out all stops to emerge victorious this time round.
The Egyptians too, strongly feel it is their turn to break the endless drought at the expense of the Pretorians in the 2025 edition of the CAF Champions League.
The second leg of this riveting clash of the African titans will take place on Sunday, June 1, at 30 June Air Defense Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, at 19h00. This is the same venue where actual and ultimate coronations of the new kings of CAF Champions League will be inaugurated.
