In a staggering turn of events in the South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL), Steve Komphela finds himself back at Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club (FC)after short stints at Moroka Swallows FC and Golden Arrows FC.

Sundowns released a communique today affirming the return of their coach who amicably left a season ago while he was still contracted to the club to join other rivals within the PSL. The circumstances of his departure were not clear at the time.

However, his homecoming finds expression on the exit of Head Coach Rhulani Mokwena from Sundowns on Thursday. To this end, the club highlighted that the latter did not meet some of the objectives set for him.

Although Mokwena emphasised his desire to stay at the club when interviewed by Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports Worldwide (MSD), Highveld Stereo, Rise FM, Vuma FM and SowetanLive, the club deemed it fit to cordially terminate their agreement.

Mamelodi Sundowns brought Komphela in 2020 as the senior coach to beef up the technical team. As the club stated then, he would report and support Joined-Head Coaches Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi. He left Sundowns in 2023 and went to Swallows and later Arrows where he concluded the 2023/2024 league campaign.

According to the club statement, the current arrangement is somewhat similar with Mngqithi assuming seniority. The pair would work together to get the team ready for the upcoming new season with a pre-season trip to Austria, the club statement said.

The well-travelled Steve Komphela has coached South Africa junior and senior men’s teams, Bloemfontein Celtics FC, Maritzburg United FC, Kaizer Chiefs FC among others.

He says in the club’s media release that his reunion with the reigning league champions is to aid them achieve domestic and continental ideals.
