England beat Switzerland 5-3 on penalties in Dusseldorf to reach the European Championship (Euro) 2024 semifinals tonight.
The duo played to a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra-time at the Merkur Spiel-Arena. Switzerland opened the scoring in the 75th minute in a tight quarter-final fixture, courtesy of Breel Embola tap in. However, Bokayo Saka levelled the scores 1-1 five minutes later and redeemed England’s dreams to fight for a victory.
Both nations tried to seize each other to find a killer punch during extra-time but nothing came of their attempts. The match ended in a deadlock and Switzerland lost in the penalty shootouts.
In a post-match media briefing, Gareth Southgate said they are getting better with every challenging phase of the tournament and now look forward to the semifinal. He stressed that when he took up the job he did that to put England at another level. His counterpart, Murat Yakin said that Switzerland did not deserve to lose and penalties could have gone either way.
For this reason, England’s next assignment is the Netherlands in the semifinals at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund on Wednesday July 10, 2024, at 21h00.
Meanwhile a day before this in Munich, Spain will play France at Allianz Arena at 21h00.
