The third-semifinalists England and Switzerland go eyeball-to-eyeball at Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf tonight at 18h00.
English are the 2020 Euro finalists and today must conjure up a stratagem to outmanoeuvre the competitive Swiss team to pave the way to repeat the feat four years ago. And, should things work out their way, go on to clinch this converted trophy.
For their part, Switzerland have been impressive in this 17th edition of the tournament. They have come a long way and will amplify their efforts to prevail over this mammoth challenge.
Of the two countries, England are compelling on paper but their performance has not lived up to the billing. They will need to be resolutely brilliant if they are to defeat Switzerland today.
England, similar to their opponent tonight, is yet to lose a match so far. But it survived a scare against Slovakia in the round of 16 where Jude Bellingham equalised right at the death, staring at the tournament exit door. The match stretched to extra time when Harry Kane found a winner in the first minute thereof. Certainly they would not want to leave it to the very last minute to overcome tonight’s rivals.
Team coach Gareth Sougthgate acknowledged their difficulties in the Slovakia post-match interview. However, he stressed that the players are getting better with each game.
The Swiss got to this stage with a convincing 2-0 triumph over the reigning champions Italy. They would wish to bring that favourable momentum and conquering spirit to get the better of England.
The heroes between this duo’s next opponents will be determined later tonight when Netherlands plays Türkiye in the fourth UEFA Euro 2024 quarterfinal.
