A brace by Merih Demiral propelled Türkiye to the quarterfinals of the Euro 2024 to face Netherlands after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Austria at Red Bull Arena Leipzig in Germany tonight.
Demiral scored just a minute into the game to give his nation a great start to a long and rowdy night. He benefited from loose ball in the 16-yard-area resulting from a corner kick which Austrian defenders failed to clear.
From then on, the game flew with another goal even though both teams were creating goal-scoring opportunities in the interim.
Austria threw all their men behind every attack to claw back into the match. However, with every foray runs they left themselves exposed at the back.
Consequently, Demiral capitalized to take the score line to 2-0 in the 59th and thus, securing his brace. The night was getting gloomy for the Austrians. Their deficit had double and that meant exiting the competition at this critical junction.
Therefore, there was not use for sitting back and invite more trouble. They increase their offensive play with purpose and precision. When hope was dissipating, Michael Gregoritsch brought Austria back into the reckoning with a 66th strike to half the deficit. At 2-1, this game was turning into a thrilling exchange.
But Türkiye dug deep to reinforce their defense lines and protect the valuable lead. While the final whistle brought unbridle joy from the Turkish, it tragic on the opposition for they all knew they were homebound.
The Austrians had five (5) shots on target and the Turkish only three (3). That means they squander more chances in comparison to their rivals who had a better conversion rate.
Türkiye won this round and progress to yet another colossal challenge against Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Saturday June 6, 2024.
