The weekend action of the DStv Premiership resumed after nearly a month of continental football hosted in Ivory Coast from Jan. 13 to Feb. 11, 2024.

Of course, Supersport United Football Club (FC) and Stellenbosch FC swung back to domestic football on friday to a 1-1 draw.

The biggest match of the weekend saw Mamelodi Sundowns FC host Orlando Pirates FC at the sold out Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday night.

Pirates took the game to Sundowns mainly in the first half with near misses in the interim but the draw went into the break goalless.

In the second half the match opened up for both clubs when Miguel Timm was sent off for an early shower.

The Brazilians [Sundowns] took advantage of their numerical advantage and piled on pressure. 

Having shown some resilience for a while, the 10-man Buccaneers [Pirates] bulked. It was a matter of time the ball rattled the back of the net.

Marcelo Allende opened the scoring for Sundowns which Pirates leveled a few minutes later through a penalty yield through pushing and shoving in the box when the latter took the corner kick.

Tapelo Xoki converted the spotkick with little difficulty, bringing the scores to 1-1. Though intense and exciting at times, very little happened in terms of affecting the stalemate outcome of the duel.

On the one hand, the draw meant no changes for the Buccaneers except a point addition to 26 in 17 games. For they are still 5th on the league standings. 

On the other hand, the Brazilians’ 15th game took them to 39 points, safely perched on the pinnacle of the premier league.
