After 24 years of waiting, South Africa (SA) men’s senior football team delivered the bronze medal in the AFrican Cup of Nations  at Félix Houphouët-Boigny of Ebimpé in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Saturday.

SA emerged 3rd in the biannual African premium tournament against Democratic Republic of Congo after a goalless draw in regulation time.

Despite being separated by a scoreline of 6-5 on penalty shootouts, both national teams had good exchanges in regular time.

On the balance of play, DRC squandered many clear-cut opportunities, thanks to the exploits of Ronwen Williams, the Bafana Bafana [SA] goalkeeper.

The South Africans last won this medal in 2000 when they beat Tunisia 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the losers’ finals.
