Nigeria, DR Congo progress to AFCON 2023 semifinals

Both Nigeria and DR Congo are one match away to the final of the 2022 edition of AFCON.

Ademola Lookman fired Nigeria to the semifinals of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Friday, Feb. 2, 2024.

His solitary goal in the 41st minute sunk Angola out of the tournament at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Ivory Coast last night.

Accordingly,  the Super Eagles [Nigeria] won this quarter-final by 1-0. They will wait for the winner between Cape Verde and South Africa playing tonight at 22h00.

DR Congo crush Guinea

In the second match of Friday night, DR Congo trampled over Guinea at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé in Abidjan.

Inspired by its previous win, Guinea got off to a good start with a penalty conversion by Mohammed Bayo in the 20th minute of the first half.

Guinea’s lead was short lived when Chancel Mbemba Mangulu leveled the scores in the 27th minute. Both teams were 1-1 at halftime.

Coming from the second half, DR Congo were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute which Yoane Wassa put away.

Traiking 2-1, Guinea had to dig deep to avoid elimination in this AFCON quarter-final knockout match.

However,  DR Congo had other ideas. In the 82nd minute, they put the final nail in Guinea’s coffin, thanks to Arthur Musuaku strike.

Leading by 3-1, DR Congo were firmly in charge of the game and that is how the match ended.

DR Congo will face the winner between host nation Ivory Coast and Mali scheduled for Saturday at 19h00.
