Host Côde d’Ivoire cruise to win AFCON 2023 opener

Host nation Côde d’Ivoire beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 opening game at Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé in Abidjan on Saturday,  Jan. 13, 2024.

Seko Fonana gave the home side a lead just four (4) minutes from kickoff. Guinea-Bissau tried in vein to claw back only to concede yet again.

This time Jean-Philippe Krasso doubled the Côde d’Ivoire advantage in the 58th minute of the second half. From here on Guinea-Bissau could not recover and the first encounter of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) premium tournament ended 2-0.

Thus, Côde d’Ivoire tops Group A with three maximum points and could not have wished for a better start. Featured in the same group are Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea due for a fierce tussle on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 16h00.
