Evidence Mokgopa’s aught goal was the difference between winners Orlando Pirates against Kaizer Chiefs FC in the DStv Premiership at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Much of the game was very quiet with an exception of the Pirates goal that came early in the first half (20′). Despite playing at home, Chiefs’ blunt attack barely threatened the Buccaneers the entire stretch of the match.
Spare a thought for the International guests led by FIFA (Federation of International Football Association) President Gianni Infantino and CAF (Confederation of African Football) President Patrice Motsepe. This delegation is in South Africa for the final match of the Inaugural African Football League Cup between Mamelodi Sundowns FC and Wydad Athletic Club at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2023.
Nevertheless, Pirates secured crucial three points to move up from 10th on the table to 7th with 15 points. This is their 4th victory in the 2023/2024 league season. For AmaKhosi though, it is back to the drawing board as they squander yet another chance to improve their standings. They dropped two notches from the 7th position with 14 points on the log before this fierce encounter to 9th
Even so, what may be more painful for them is losing a derby to their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates. The interim coach Kelvin Johnson praised his troops especially for their better performance in the second half to which he attributed to a sense of urgency but they were unfortunate to be rewarded with a goal or two.
His counterpart José Riverio said in a post-match interview that it is hard to be in full control of these kinds of matches but had a good first half sprinkled with “moments of brilliance”.
