Two matches of the 2023 MTN Top8 quarter-finals have been played. There are two Soweto giants who have qualified.
The first is Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club (FC) that brushed aside Moroka Swallows FC 1-0 at Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, this afternoon.
The only goal of the bright Saturday afternoon came from the club’s captain Themba Zwane (48′) just after returning from the break.
The second was an evening fixture in Soweto, Johannesburg, where Orlando Pirates FC obliterated Sekhukhune 5-0 at the legendary Orlando Stadium.
Zakhele Lepasa’s hat-trick (22′, 56′, 87′) Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo (59′) and Monnapule Saleng (62′) goals helped Pirates send a clear message of defending this cup. Sekhukhune were suffocated and could not even master a goal.
Orlando Pirates the holders of the MTN8 Cup and if yesterday’s outcome is any signal, they look the stronger of the teams so far.
Pirates and Sundowns have booked their places in the MTN8 semi-final. They will await the winners of Cape Town City FC taking on Kaizer Chiefs in Cape Town and SuperSport United FC against Stellenbosch FC in Polokwane.
