A Zakhele Lepasa brace helped Orlando Pirates overcome an obstinate Royal AM side in a league encounter yesterday in Johannesburg.

Orlando Pirates Football Club (FC) made amends from their DStv Premiership League loss to Stellenbosch FC last Saturday in Cape Town.

They beat Royal AM 4-2 in Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night to collect their first three points of the 2023/2024 league campaign.

The host opened the score with a Lepasa (15′) goal and Monnapule Saleng (29′) doubled the lead. Pirates went 3-0 ahead when Lepasa netted on the 35th minute.

Few mminutes before halftime Royal AM coach John Maduka make four direct substitutions. He got rewarded for rearranging his lineup Hopewell Cele (45′) made the score 3-1.

The visitors upped their ante and Mxolisi Macuphu (88′) gave the KwaZulu-Natal side hope with the scoreline reading 3-2. The Soweto giants were not going to forfeit advantage playing home.

Thus, tthey increased the tally to 4-2 through Bandile Shandu’s (90 + 3′) match officials’ added time. With that goal, Pirates had put the game to bed – beyond Royal AM’s reach – and begged maximum points.

Richard Bay United FC 1-2 Golden Arrows FC

Meanwhile in Durban Arrows overcame Richard Bay 2-1 in their league tie at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium last night.
