After hours of breathtaking search, the American Coast Guard confirmed that a “debris field” located in the seabed near the wreckage of the Titanic is that of the missing OceanGate submersible.
The discovered external parts include the frame at the bottom of the submersible on which it rests and its tail end.
Rear Adm. John Mauger, United States Coast Guard, announced that a “debris field” was found on the sea bed Thursday morning. The exterior parts are “consistent with the catastrophic implosion of the vessel”. However, Mauger could not confirm the time the internal blurst happened.
The family members were contacted and informed forthwith and he extended “heartfelt condolences”. The Coast Guard said search and rescue is continuing in a complex and dangerous environment over 2 miles below on the seabed to investigate the site of the gruesome discovery.
CNN confirmed that the Coast Guard indicated the debris field was found “1,600 feet away from the bow of the Titanic”. It further reported that the “capsule itself” has not yet been discovered.
On Sunday June. 18, the submersible carrying a crew of five people in a scientific adventure lost connection 1h45 from descent to explore the epic English titanic ship that sank in 1912.
It is reported that to locate the wreckage of over a century-old Titanic, a submarine should cover a distance of nearly 4km from the surface of the ocean. This meant a 2-hour dive and 6-hour exploration under water before emerging on the surface for another 2-hour travel.
As it was reported widely in the International media, the submersible had oxygen to last until Thursday morning. On Wednesday Jun. 21, a banging noise was recorded by a Canadian robot rover deployed to scour the seafloor where the submarine disappeared.
It comes as a slight relief that at least some exterior remnants of the submersible were finally found on the site where it lost all contact. The “debris field” does not reveal yet what could have happened. The rescue mission continue their painstaking work. OceanGate was quoted Thursday Jun. 22 by CNN saying “we give the loss of life of crew”.
The search and rescue mission included the American Coast Guard, Canadians and the French among notable agents. In the meantime, the scouring expedition for finer details of this tragedy carries on.
