Mayor of Johannesburg falls on his own sword

ANC Provincial Chairperson and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced the resignation of Thapelo Amad as the mayor of Johannesburg on Monday, April 24.

A member of Al-Jama-ah, Amad thanked all the political parties which were part of the coalition that enabled him to become the mayor of Johannesburg.

He was elected into the mayoral office in January this year after Democratic Alliance councilor Mpho Phalatse was ousted in a vote of no confidence.

The African National Congress-backed Amad was thrown in the deep end of one of the biggest municipalities in South Africa and the hub of economic city in Africa.

When it became apparent that Al Jaha-ah candidate was not cut out for one the changing jobs in local government, Thapelo Amad fell on his own sword yesterday.
