Bruno Fernandez assisted his countrymen to overcome a stubborn Uruguay squad by 2-0 at Lusail Stadium in Lusail (Qatar) last night.
This Group H World Cup duel had few scoring opportunities; it could have simply ended in a draw. Fernandez (54′) broke the deadlock coming from the left flank and cut inside to bend a sumptuous curler cross aimed for his captain Cristiano Ronaldo. The skipper missed it by a whisker but his attempt was good enough to distract the Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet as the ball sailed into the net.
Just three minutes into the match officials’ additional time, Fernandez converted from spotkick to double the Portuguese lead. Uruguay were finally out of the very tactical game.
Portugal tops the group with six points from after two games. Ghana is behind with three points after a win and a loss. South Korea (3rd) and Uruguay (4th) are a point each with one game to be played by each in this group.
