Argentina star-captain Lionel Messi delivered a masterful performance in the second half of the game against Mexico to give his side a lifeline in the FIFA World Cup tournament. Starting its second match on the back foot, Argentina sprung into action with a bang on Saturday night.
They beat Mexico 2-0 at Lusail Stadium in Lusail, Qatar, against massive pressure to win at all costs. Messi pulled a wonderful goal (64′) from a tight Mexican defence to propel his countrymen to opening a window to qualify for the next stage.
Mexico did not sit and absorb the pressure piled by the Argentinians. They pushed for an equaliser. But Enzo Fernandez had other ideas when he received a pass from Messi and controlled the ball then lost a defender to whip a curler on to the top far corner of the Mexico goal and doubled Argentina’s lead in the 87th minute.
The Argentina’s three points victory makes Group C more interesting with Poland on top with four points and Saudi Arabia 3rd on three points. Messi’s Argentina are 2nd on the mini-log. In their final game Argentina will face Poland meanwhile the Saudis will have a date with Mexico rooted at the bottom of the group with a sinking point.
