As predicted by football pundits, the Qatar afternoon belonged to England as they took their first World Cup game by the scruff of its neck from the first whistle.
Although their first goal came 10 minutes away from the break through Jude Bellingham, the second by Bukayo Saka followed eight minutes later. Just before the stroke of half time, Raheem Sterling took the tally to 3-0.
Better yet, Iran had no answers in the second half for the ferocious English onslaught. And it got worse. In the 62nd minute Saka got his brace for the day to bring the scoreline to 4-0.
It was not until the Iranians pulled one back, thanks to Mehdi Tameri (65′), to reduce the pounding to 4-1 when Marcus Rashford added his name on the scoring charts in the 71st minute. The English were not through at 5-1. Jack Grealish had a shout on 90th minute making the score 6-1. The last goal of the one-sided World Cup match came from Tameri through a penalty (90+13′).
This Group B match ended 6-2 in favour of England and tops the table with three points from the first fixture game. Meanwhile the United States of America (USA) drew 1-1 with Wales in the same group.
