Soweto Derby: Orlando Pirates Football Club (FC) vs Kaizer Chiefs FC

Gauteng, South Africa – If it appears more like a déjà vu, then it sure is because this Soweto derby has been around for well over five decades. And here they go again, their paths cross as they did before. This time they square up in the DStv Premiership league to slugging it out for the three points at stake.

FNB Stadium will bear witness to one of the incredibly anticipated battles in domestic football when Pirates lock horns against Chiefs at soccer city, Johannesburg, at 15h30.

The Soweto derby is one of the greatest drawcard games in Africa and parts of the world. As per tradition, the tickets to attend the event were sold out before their first clash in a full capacity stadium since the Covid-19 breakout.

In respect to the real action that matters most, Pirates have enjoyed a good run so far in the new season and will descend to this classic neighbourhood rivalry with an upper hand. The Buccaneers topped their performance when they eliminated the all-conquering Mamelodi Sundowns FC in the MTN8 Cup semi-finals the past weekend.

Without a doubt, Chiefs will bring out their best to defend their pride and the brand that earned them “The Glamour Boys” tagline. However, that Amakhosi have not had good results in a long time and, this season is no different, is a lingering fear among their supporters. Facing a team like Pirates in their current scintillating form will require them to dig deep.

Although today is a league match, the meeting between these two gigantic SA clubs has, more often than not, given birth to thrilling spectacle.

One thing for certain is that the atmosphere in a packed FNB stadium which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 FIFA (Federation of International Football Association) World Cup will be as inviting as it ever was. For when Orlando Pirates play Kaizer Chiefs, it is always the case.
