Rhulani Mokwena’s first assignment as Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club head coach begins tonight away in Maritzburg.

Sundowns are away to Maritzburg United FC in the DStv Premiership at Harry Gwala Stadium tonight at 19h30.

The Team of Choice are not getting the results they desire from the inception of the new season. Under the guidance of John Maduka, Maritzburg lie 13th on the log with 11 points from 11 league games with two wins.

Maduka is not meeting a high-flying Sundowns outfit if the new changes in Pretoria are any hint. The management of the Brazilians dismantled the co-coaching structure comprising Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena as head coaches with equal status. In doing so, Steve Komphela was brought in as senior coach reporting directly to the pair.

The new set up shows Mokwena elevated to the head coach and Komphela second in command as first-team coach. Meanwhile Mngqithi is demoted to the position left by Komphela. The full effect of changing the technical deck chairs with Mokwena at helm take places at Maritzburg foray this evening.

In the league front, Sundowns are at the summit with 22 points after 10 fixtures and are not doing bad by domestic football standards.

Coming off a brutal loss to Orlando Pirates over the weekend in a cup game, Sundowns will look to make amends far from home. Interestingly, the Team of Choice have not been at their best but might as well lay a claim to inflict more pain to their guests. For all its worth, this league clash is intriguing.
