Maritzburg wrestle Pirates down

Monday | September 5, 2022

Maritzburg United FC defeated Orlando Pirates FC in the DStv Premiership League matche held at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg Sunday evening.

The only goal of the game came from a penalty duly converted by Amadou Soukouna on the 80th minute. That penalty strike sent the home fans (who came out in numbers) to absolute delirium.

The Buccaneers attempted to claw back in the game but the Maritzburg defence was equal to the difficult task of dealing with the aggressive offensive play from their opponents.

Their goalkeeper, King Ndlovu, earned the man-of-the-match award, crystallising how fierce the Pirates attack was.

The league match ended 1-0, a much needed win for John Maduka, the Maritzburg head coach, his second win for the 2022/2023 DStv Premiership campaign.

The Team of Choice handed the Orlando Pirates Spanish coach Jose Riveiro his second loss in the league in his maiden season in the Premier Soccer League in South Africa.

As result, the Buccaneers dropped from pole position to 3rd on the log with 11 points after seven league games. They have won three and drew two games so far.

Meanwhile the Team of Choice is hovering in the middle of the league table with nine points after three draws and one loss from their seven encounters.
