It was a different ball game at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium last night where SuperSport United FC got the better of their arch-rival Mamelodi Sundowns FC in the DStv Premiership league draw.

Matsatsantsa defeated the defending league champions 2-1 in a gripping Tshwane derby.

The hosts were two goals ahead of Sundowns before halftime. Thapelo Maseko opened the Supersport account in the 9th minute from kick-off and their ever-reliable marksman Bradley Grobler grabbed a winner on the 46th minute before the break.

The two-strike assists that slowed Sundowns momentum were provided by man-of-the-match Iqraam Rayners.

Although the Brazilians dominated ball possession as they usually do, the SuperSport defence line was equal to the task marshalled by team-captain Thulani Hlatshwayo. A game plan he and the players executed well as devised by their head coach Gavin Hunt.

Sundowns unleashed the multi-million rands galaxy of stars to claw back but they could not penetrate their opponents. Just before the final whistle sounded, Abubeker Nasser pulled one back to half the deficit. However, it proved too little too late for the hard-to-beat Pretoria juggernaut.

The Friday win pushed SuperSport to 8th on the log with eight points after six games. This is their second and most important win in the 2022/2023 league campaign.

Up to this point, Sundowns remain rooted on position two (with 10 points) behind Orlando Pirates FC on top. Last night’s game was their 6th of the new season and a second loss thereof.
