Cape Town City Football Club got their first win through a 2-0 victory against Kaizer Chiefs FC in the DStv Premiership at Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town Tuesday night.

Darwin Gonzales opened the City account just 5 minutes after the kick off from a Thamsanqa Mkhize tricky cross behind Chiefs defenders. Speaking to SuperSport, Arthur Zwane,  Kaizer Chiefs coach,  commented that they started very slow and were sloppy at the back.

City were emboldened and seemed to have found their mojo with that first goal as they piled on the pressure on their visitors. It should have been a rout in just the first half,  coach Eric Tinkler remarked in the post-match interview on SuperSport.

Chiefs came in the second half with command in search of an equalizer. City found themselves setting back in their own half for a good 15 minutes absorbing and watching Amakhosi (Chiefs) dictate terms.

The team tried to come in the second half and unfortunately “we” did not capitalize on the resultant few chances, Zwane emphasized. 

The Citizens (City) made matters worse for Chiefs when they doubled their lead to 2-0 through a Nathan Fasika thumping header from a free kick floated in the box.

Kaizer Chiefs could not recover from that increased tally. Tonight’s loss was their 3rd of the new campaign.

City have moved from the bottom of the to 12th on the log with five points from six games played to this end.

Chiefs slid two places before the game to 10th position arising from six points from their twins after five league matches in the new season.

Tinkler sounded relieved with his maiden three points in the 2022/2023 DStv Premiership League race. “It is not like we were not playing well,” he said. Adding that they were a bit unlucky in their initial games.

The seemingly dejected Zwane summoned up his courage and filed off with: “The boys gave their best… we will learn from this game and move”.

Swallows secure home victory over Sekhukhune 

In Soweto, Swallows FC defeated Sekhukhune United FC 2-1 in their league encounter at Dobsonville Stadium.

There were only two fixtures scheduled for Tuesday night in the DStv Premiership League. The other fixtures are set for tomorrow, Wednesday.
