It comes as no shock. There was too much speculation about the position of Pitso Mosimane at Al Ahly Sporting Club after his loss to Wydad Athletic Club in the final of the CAF Champions League a fortnight ago.

Al Ahly’s managing board brought the uncertainty to an end when it announced that the board was satisfied with Mosimane’s achievements with the Egyptian giants. As a consequence of that board decision, the Soweto born coach was retained.

No sooner had Al Ahly confirmed Mosimane’s stay at the club had he requested to relinquish his job as head coach. The club heeded his call and released him forthright on Monday, June 13. Deducing from the club’s statement, it is clear that Mosimane wanted out from a previously held meeting with the board. His retention was inconsequential because the South African horse had bolted. 

The former Mamelodi Sundowns striker and coach did not hint about his future concerning football at the time of writing. On his way out, he paid homage to a legion of Egyptian fans, players and management for the time and opportunity. The ex-SA senior national men’s team coach left Sundowns and joined Al Ahly in October 2020. He won two Champions League trophies and the Egyptian Cup as well as two CAF Super Cups with the club among his milestones during his tenure.
