Orlando Stadium will provide a perfect center pitch when Orlando Pirates Football Club (FC) host their arch nemesis Kaizer Chiefs FC in the Dstv Premiership in Soweto at 15:30 SAT.
The meeting between the giant Premier Soccer League (PSL) rivals carries a rich history dipped in memorable encounters. However, optics argue that since the rise and dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns FC in the domestic front and the continent, they have lagged far behind. By a mere glance at the gap of a 19-point the pair trail Sundowns, there is little if any closing in.
Chiefs accumulated 32 points from 18 league games placing them 3rd on the log while Pirates clocked the same tally after seeing 21 fixtures and lie 4th. Perched pretty comfortably at the pinnacle of the Premiership table are Sundowns with 51 points 22 from matches.
This Saturday clash is a mere formality to decide the three points and the temporary joy of beating each other in a near-death derby.
There were times when the mere mention of the Soweto derby featuring Orlando Pirates Football Club (FC) and Kaizer Chiefs FC would dominate the airwaves and social circles in South Africa. That is not the case anymore.
Although their fortunes haven’t been pleasing of late, Pirates and Chiefs are the big clubs in South Africa and command a huge following. Sadly, the league title keeps evading them as the Pretoria juggernaut, Sundowns, clean season in and season out.
Yet, the Soweto derby will stay as relevant to the enthusiasts and punters. Though it does not deliver much in comparison with its former roaring glorious years, it still exists and fixtures are honored as they should. If not for nostalgia, Pirates and Chiefs diehard supporters always wish for something exceptional with every passing face-off. This afternoon will be no different.
