South Africa has seen yet another calm day, said the Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, post a week-long chaos of looting, vandalism and general arson that engulf two main provinces – KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. The riots which started off as protests against the incarceration of the former President Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma for contempt of court order have come to be known as a failed “insurrection” according to the current President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa.

However, all is not well in the country with the raging and relentless Covid-19 pandemic.

After three days of lower confirmed Covid-19 related deaths numbers, South Africa recorded yet another spike in the 24 hours.

A nerve-wracking 596 death toll was released by the Department of Health last night. This takes the death tally to 67, 676 since its first report on March 27, 2020.

On the positive side, 8, 929 Covid-19 infections were confirmed by the authorities which showed a continuing decline trajectory. SA overall known infections of the Covid-19 scourge stand at 2, 312 323. At the moment, there are 158, 437 active known cases in the country.
