Mamelodi Sundowns need a mere win to claim the 2020/2021 Dstv Premiership League honours.

Imposing on their way to this historic realization are SuperSport United, their Pretoria arch-rivals. 

These top-draw nemesis meet tonight (17:00), 26 May, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Notably, Sundowns are the defending champions of this league rat-race. The Brazilians are leading the domestic Premiership pack with 57 points after 26 games.

Behind them are Amazulu Football Club sitting on 50 points in their 2-game streak. Should Amazulu win all the (three) remaining games, they will end up on a possible 59-point rally. Therefore, 60 points will be sufficient to claim this 30-match season-long trophy.

In essence, Mamelodi Sundowns need three points from their remaining four games to be declared this season’s champions.

Focusing on today’s encounter with Sundowns, SuperSport can improve their 6th spot on the log to 4th with a win. They have accumulated 41 points after 27 matches.

Black Leopards vs Kaizer Chiefs

In another league draw today, Kaizer Chiefs travel to Thohoyandou this afternoon to face Black Leopards in a Dstv Premiership match at Thohoyandou Stadium. The game is set to start at 15:00.

In this league clash, Leopards are fighting for their lives to remain in the most lucrative league in the continent. In contrast, they are playing the Soweto giant which has been scrapping through almost the entire 2020/2021 league campaign.

On par, these two are pretty poised in terms of their performances this season except that Chiefs are not in the relegation battle. However, they find themselves in unfamiliar terrory as concerns the league standings. They need these points as much as Leopards’ sinking desperation.

An unlikely win for Leopards may spring an outside chance to sneak in the playoffs later. They will take their point to 22, just three behind 15th spot Chippa United.

But as it stands, that they are a relegation candidate is undisputed. With their three remaining games on 19 points so far, they can go as far as position 15.

Chippa United are occupying this position with 25 points and two games to see off. They are pretty much in a precarious position as well. They will not sit back and watch helplessly either. They will mount a massive fight of their own.

Obviously the odds are stacked against the bottom-placed Thohoyandou-based club as they wrestle Kaizer Chiefs in search of any remaining points to wage their luck in the top eight. They [Chiefs] are now laying 11th after 27 games to an accumulative 30 points. A win will push them to 8th.

Both these Wednesday league fixtures posit interesting ripples with glorious trappings on one end and depressing on the other.
