If bookies said that Amazulu Football Club (FC) would be among the top contenders for this 2020/2021 league campaign, many would not have fallen for it. However, the Usuthu star is soaring even higher. They have mounted the pinnacle of one of the most prestigious leagues in Africa – the Dstv Premiership.
Since the inception of the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Amazulu Football Club never hit the 50 points mark. That is history for the winds of change are definitely sweeping across the domestic football expanse.
Amazulu have accumulated 50 in their 26 matches so far. True to form, their latest victims were KwaZulu-Natal arch-rivals Golden Arrows whom they defeated by 2-1 at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont on Saturday.
The only goal of the match came from Luvuyo Memela just at the stroke of half-time in an all-out attack and exhilarating match.
This win took Usuthu to the top of the league leaving Mamelodi Sundowns trailing them by two points and three games. The latter will visit Orlando Pirates in a league meeting on Sunday, May 2. Until then, Amazulu are now the leaders of the elite league in South Africa (SA).
The head coach, former SA international and European Champions League winner Benni McCarthy could not contain his joy after the Saturday victory. Adding in a post-match interview on Super Sport that they are leading for today because tomorrow there is going to be a big battle (between Pirates and Sundowns) in Orlando, Soweto.
Given their achievement so far, it is clear that McCarthy and his technical team, not discounting the management, have transformed the club in a short space of time. Under this coach, Amazulu have set an all-time new record. And from now on, anything is possible; but one thing for certain is that they have done so much. The results are showing.
