King Zwelithini died at age 72

The King of the Zulu nation Goodwill Zwelithini passed away Friday, March12. His death was confirmed by Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi early Friday morning.

eNCA reported that King Zwelithini was undergoing “high levels of glucose” (diabetes) treatment when he succumbed in hospital. A Royal Family member who spoke to eNCA said on Friday that the King was in hospital for a month.

Born July 1948 in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, his reign spanned a period of five decades as the Zulu monarch.

According to South African History, being the eldest son of King Cyprian, Zwelithini:

lived at his father’s official residence at Khethomthandayo and received formal instruction in traditional Zulu customs. In 1968 his father died and a regent was appointed to look after the administration of the Royal affairs while Zwelithini completed his education.”
