Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club President Patrice Motsepe has been elected the new Confederation of African Football (CAF) President.

Motsepe was vying for the top job in African football with three candidates who threw in the towel in the last minute to become and support him as his deputies. The mining magnate has become the 7th CAF boss and the first man in South Africa to ascend to such heights.

As the rivalry intensified in the final stages of the elections, the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) President Gianni Infantino seemed to lean towards and ultimately threw his weight behind the Motsepe ticket. For his part, the new CAF President has assured the football-loving masses of greater things to come for the sport.

Motsepe is a billionaire tycoon with multiple interests in different industries ranging from mining to finance. BBC says he is the 10th richest man in Africa with a $3 billion wealth under his crown.

Forbes posted that:

“Patrice Motsepe, the founder and chairman of African Rainbow Minerals, became a billionaire in 2008 – the first black African on the Forbes list… In 1997, he bought low-producing gold mine shafts and later turned them profitable.”

It is expected that Motsepe will bring some of his business acumen and dexterity to enrich African football in its highest point of financial need.
