Pirates rattle crosstown rivals, Chiefs

Saturday | January 30, 2021

Never a game to be written on the walls of  fantasy punters. Once again, the Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs produced an exhilarating show of league football at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Even Pirates may have felt a jolt of incredulity when they went ahead by two clear goals a few minutes away from the final whistle. But that lead was halved while there basking in the temporary 2-goal cushion.

The Pirates goals came from Siphesihle Ndlovu (79′) and Thembinkosi Lorch (37′). And Chiefs’ insufficient goal this afternoon was scored by Daniel Cardoso (84′). Of course, the visitors had a penalty saved before their solitary. Had it gone in, the game would have turned on its head. Nevertheless, it was a nail-biting finish in the finality of it all.

The maximum three points earned by The Buccaneers push them to 4th in the DStv Premiership League standings. Only five points differentiate them with log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns who are on 30 points. Pirates are ahead by one game played though. Chiefs remain with 18 points and positioned 8th on the log after 5 games.
