Few football matches come close to the unbridled anticipation and emotive epic age-old Soweto derby between the well-known South Africa giants – Orlando Pirates Football Club (FC) and Kaizer Chiefs FC.
They lock horns in the DStv Premiership today at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg, the home of Pirates at 15:30.
The Buccaneers [Pirates] have their hopes high in climbing the log since a win will bring them closer to three leading clubs.
Their cross-town archival this afternoon, Amakhosi, are still gathering momentum from their underwhelming start to the 2020/21 league season. Their quest though will be to keep improving until they are within a reasonable touching distance from the runaway pack atop the DStv Premiership table.
Regardless of recent form or previous encounters, the duo’s games always evoke infectious excitement across the football spectrum that ripples and often draws audiences beyond the South African borders.
A lot like a reassuring sibling rivalry, it is with this astounding precedence that Pirates and Chiefs clashes manage to grab football enthusiasts’ attention irrespective of what is at stake.
Both clubs find themselves in unfamiliar positions on the league table; perhaps more so for Chiefs than Pirates. However, respectable positions on the league’s standings or not, the Soweto derby brings out the best out of both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. Without fans in stadiums due to imposed government regulations around the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, will the celebrated derby retain its spark and aura?
