Soweto giants held by minnows in DStv league matches

Wednesday | January 27, 2021

On Tuesday, Soweto giants – Orlando Pirates and Kaizer – set out to close the gap at the top of the DStv Premiership League.

The outcome was less than impressive for both these most supported teams in South Africa.

Pirates drew 1-1 with TS Galaxy in Orlando Stadium and the same draw score was registered between Chiefs and Baroka FC at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Savouring the home-ground advantage, Orlando Pirates opened the scoring with Bongani Sam 10 minutes from kick off. However, TS Galaxy fought back nine (9) minutes later through a Masilakhe Phohlongo goal to tie the scores.

In the 52nd minute, Baroka shocked Chiefs with an early lead when Thamsanqa Tshiamo Masiya found the back of the net. Chiefs piled on pressure and led to an own goal by Baroka’s Goodman Mosele 75 minutes in the league game to level matters.

These draws betray what can be expected in the Soweto derby on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2021. If anything, there is not much to read as a compelling harbinger for the forthcoming age-old derby.

Wednesday Jan. 27 DStv Premiership Fixture
