The Gauteng Provincial Department of Basic Education stopped Helpmekaar College from continuing with its school calendar regardless of Covid-19 regulations announced by the national government.

Situated in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, the 100 years old school was reportedly meant to open for all grades Monday, Jan. 18, despite the 2-week delay announced by Deputy Minister of DBE Makgabo Reginah Mhaule on Jan. 15.

Speaking to the media, Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi said all schools, private or public, must be closed in line with the Covid-19 regulations owing to the resurgence in cases.

The college had opened its doors last week, according to the school Principal. However, it will comply with the Department’s regulations that it must remain closed. However, the school said it has migrated to online in order to carry on with its academic activities.

Further, Lesufi said he had a long discussion with the Curro Group of schools management to also toe the government line.
