The Department of Basic Education in South Africa has put on ice the reopening of schools on Jan. 27, 2021. Instead, schools will resume on Feb. 15, 2021.

The delay in starting the 2021 academic year is largely motivated by the surge in Covid-19 cases and the number of fatalities.
