Trevor Phillips, the erstwhile Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Premier Soccer League (PSL), passed away on Monday, the PSL media statement confirmed.

Mr. Phillips was the first PSL CEO ever. In its statement, PSL said:

“The NSL Executive Committee conveys its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Phillips’ family, more particularly, his wife Stella and his children Mark and Sharon. We supplicate that GOD gives them fortitude at this moment of their extreme grief and pain.” 

Known for his no-nonsense approach to the administration of domestic football in South Africa, Phillips, nicknamed “British Bulldog”, helped the PSL to be the most powerful and profitable brand it is known today.

He served two tenures in the PSL – from 1996 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2007. During these periods, PSL signed historic television rights deals that saw affiliate clubs benefit directly and substantially so.
