Benni McCarthy will be back this afternoon at the helm of Usuthu – AmaZulu Football Club (FC) – in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
In today’s DStv Premiership League battle, AmaZulu will welcome Chippa United FC at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium in Durban at 15:30.
The former Bafana Bafana International striker McCarthy, is reconnecting with the domestic elite league as the new head coach of Usuthu after his last stint (2017-2019) with Cape Town City FC. He was shown the door after a string of poor results in November 2019.
Benni McCarthy is expected and has assured the AmaZulu faithful that he will turn things around as they are currently languishing near the bottom end of the league standings (13th) with six points after seven league games.
For coach McCarthy, he would not have asked for a better relaunch on this Sunday afternoon than the struggling Chippa United. The Chilli Boys [Chippa] are just a point behind AmaZulu. They are having a horrendous start to the new season.
Given how bad both teams are doing at the moment, the likely outcome is canceling each other out. That is not to say the own backyard advantage for AmaZulu does not matter. No. It does but in these Covid-19 times where fans are prohibited from stadium(s), the edge for home ground is somewhat insignificant.
Black Leopards vs Swallows FC
In another fixture scheduled for today, Leopards will host Swallows at Thohoyandou Stadium in Thohoyandou.
The kick off for this league encounter is at 15:30.
Although Leopards have not had a good start to the 2020/21 season, their games are pleasing to the eye. For this reason, Swallows have to be wary with Black Leopards playing in home turf.
Even so, The Birds – Swallows FC – have surprised the football fraternity with their impressive showing after promotion to elite league. Laying 2nd on 15 points, they trail log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by three points. There are two additional teams – SuperSport United (3rd) and Cape Town City (4th) – on 15 points, the same point-score as Swallows.
This shows how tough a team Leopards are facing in Swallows. Just a notch from the bottom with five points and one win in seven games, Lidoda Duvha are under massive pressure not to drop points any further.
