South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa  reactivated Covid-19 measures on Thursday night in the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) municipality due to the rising infections in that area.

With the exception of the Eastern Cape (EC) and  Western Cape (WC), other provinces have recorded steady increases in coronavirus total numbers.

On Thursday, the Department of Health reported on its daily cases record yet another increase from Wednesday’s 4, 731 day cases to 4, 400 today. The death count has also shown a climb from yesterday 64 to 94 on Thursday. The EC accounts for nearly 50% of the dead people confirmed on Dec. 3.

The total number of the deceased people stands at 21, 803 so far. Meanwhile Covid-19 infections have risen to 800, 872 overall.

At this point the EC and WC have been flagged as the most concerning provinces where resurgence of the pandemic is on the rise. Ramaphosa declared the NMB locality as the epicenter of the new spike.

Thus reintroducing a curfew from 10PM to 4AM effective immediately. Alcohol sales have been revised to Mondays to Thursdays between 9AM to 6PM with restrictions on public consumption. In a move to curb the spread, the President also announced a prohibition on gatherings of no more than 100 people and/or 50% of a carrying capacity of a venue. Furthermore, initiation schools are prohibited during this period in the NMB area.

Ramaphosa’s Thursday night speech sought to encourage the citizens not to be complacent because danger still lurks as it did from the beginning when the outbreak of the deadly epidemic took effect.
