It was not a typical Saturday football afternoon for the Pretorians. It was an emotional rather sad game in honour of Anele Ngcongca who passed away on Monday morning in a freak car accident. Nevertheless, the clinical Mamelodi Sundowns ripped Stellenbosch FC to shreds in home turf. The score did not resemble the melancholic league show, however.

Just three days after Swallows FC replaced Mamelodi Sundowns FC on the DStv Premiership summit, the former sprung back (on it) in a resounding style this evening.

The defending league champions hammered helpless Stellenbosch FC 3-0 at Lotus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday.

The victorious goals came from Peter Shalulile 7′, Kermis Erasmus 26′ and Themba Zwane 62′ respectfully.

Had Sundowns not put their feet of the paddle, it could have very much been an avalanche of goals against the Stellies who traveled a long way from Cape Town to Gauteng.

It is not as if the Cape Townians were anonymous in the stadium, the stark difference was the quality of both teams and talent on display. On that scale in particular, Sundowns were head and shoulders above their opponents on the field.

The rip-roaring Brazilians win, fourth of the season after five games, restored them to the cockpit in front of the pack with 13 points. Accordingly, trailing them with 11 (points) are Swallows.

Needless to say that both teams (positioned 1 and 2 on the log) will be in action on Tuesday, Dec. 5. While Swallows will be on the road to Lamontville Golden Arrows, Sundowns will be visiting the out-of-sorts Maritzburg United.

Honouring Ngcongca 

The game was paused abruptly 16 minutes into the game to symbolize respect in honour of the deseased former South Africa international footballer and Sundowns defender Anele Ngcongca. Quite sadly, he lost his precious life at the tender age of 33 in a car accident on Monday, Nov. 23, morning. 

Ngcongca had moved away from Sundowns to join AmaZulu FC recently after four rewarding years decorated with trophies.

Yet, his former teamsmates still recognized and valued him, rightfully so, as one of their own. So much so the club released a joint statement with AmaZulu, his new home, in memory of his remarkable contribution in SA football.
