Bradley Grobler netted twice to secure a valuable victory for SuperSport United FC away to Maritzburg United FC on Friday under the Pietermaritzburg night.

It was an exciting fast-paced game that ended 2-1 in favour of the travellers from Pretoria.

Maritzburg profited from an own goal (8′) by SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams when Onismor Bhasera attempted to clear the ball a few yards from the goalline. Six minutes later, Grobler restored parity.

Immediately after Judas Moseamedi’s goal was denied to put the home side ahead, Grobler scored [64′] his second – SuperSport’s winner – from what appeared to be an offside position. The goal stood and SuperSport got maximum points.

Last night’s win placed Matsatsantsa to 3rd place on the log with nine points after five games. The Team of Choice suffered their fifth success loss in the 2020/2021 season condemning them to the bottom of the league table with zero points.

Delron Buckley, Maritzburg assistant coach, said in a post-match interview on SuperSport Channel that the match was tight; however, SuperSport took their chances. However, his counterpart’s saw it differently. Kaitano Tembo’s remarks were that they dominated in the first half. Thus, Tembo intimated that SuperSport should have wrapped it up there and then.

It is back to the drawing board and the team will keep trying, Buckley filed off. Meanwhile Ernst Middendorp, the new Maritzburg United head coach unveiled midweek, watched helplessly from the empty stands. Middendorp replaced Eric Tinkler, former South Africa international midfielder and Orlando Pirates coach.

On Wednesday, Bloemfontein Celtic FC narrowly defeated Black Leopards 1-0 in Bloemfontein in a night game. This Celtic’s first league in the season. With five points after five games, they are now positioned 14th on the league table. 

It took 54 minutes for Celtic to get the winning goal from team’s captain, Ndumiso Mabena.
