Kimi Makwetu, the outgoing Auditor-General (AG) of South Africa, has died in hospital, a statement from his office read.

He was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in 2018. With his tenure ending this November, Makwethu was due to join the United Nations Independent Advisory Committee.

Born and breed in the Cape Town, he acquired a degree in Social Sciences in 1989 at the University of Cape Town, according to Auditor-General South Africa’s (AGSA) website. In 1997, it says, he obtained a BCompt Honours at University of Natal and was also a Chartered Accountant (CA).

Makwetu was nearing his fixed 7-year term as the head of this valuable public institution at the time of his untimely death.

Makwetu worked in highly recognized private firms like Nampak, Liberty Life abd Deloitte inter alia before he was appointed Deputy Auditor-General, and in 2013 he became its head, AGSA posted.

The office of AG audits government departments at all levels, municipalities and state-owned enterprises.
