After days of national protests mobilised by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) against Clicks’ offensive advert, the two parties have reached an agreement.
According to EFF’s statement released Thursday, Sep. 10:
“Clicks will donate 50 000 sanitary towels, 50 000 sanitisers and masks to rural and informal settlements identified by EFF… award a scholarship to five students sto pursue pharmaceutical qualifications in the next academic year (2021). All five must be black, rural, African female and orphaned by HIV and AIDS.”
Clicks ignited public anger through a TRESemmé advert posted on their website denigrating hair of a black woman while elevating the hair of a white woman to supreme status.
Their stores could not open for a few days due to vociferous protests. In the end, the retailer apologised and delisted Unilever’s TRESemmé brand, the main source of the advert.
