Few days ago, there was a 6-point gap between them. They are square now on 53 points apiece. What separates them at the top of the Absa Premiership league is a mere goal difference.

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at Orlando stadium in Soweto on Thursday night.

Guided by the Covid-19 government regulations, the gigantic tie was played in spectator-free Johannesburg bright lights.

Gastón Sirino guided the ball to the far post of the approaching Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi to give the visitors a one-goal lead. He received an inviting pass from Themba Zwane’s cheek-flick to slot the only goal of the game.

Amakhosi were subdued. Although Saniro struck in the first half, they never recovered. From that point onwards, The Brazilians deployed their CAF Champions League experience and chess-managed the game until the final whistle.

Sundowns’ victory last night blew the league race wide open. 

Supersport United are 3rd on 48 points while Bidvest Wits 4th on 47 points. Mathematically, they are in with a slight chance. Realistically, it is clearly a two-horse contest. But the beautiful game has dished out some wonderful moments. Will this season’s league edition deliver such a momentus photo-finish?

Both Chiefs and Sundowns have three fixtures to wrap up the 2019/20 delayed season.

Upcoming league fixtures

Kaizer Chiefs are clinging at the summit of the log by a thin thread. It can snap anytime from now.

Their next date is an away game to Bidvest Wits at FNB stadium on Sunday Aug. 30 at 15h30.

This game will be followed by Chippa United on Sep. 2 at Orlando at 18h00. On their final match of the season they travel to Baroka FC at Bidvest stadium on Sep. 5 at 15h30. These may become scrappy encounters for Kaizer Chiefs since both Chippa and Baroka are fighting their relegation battles.

On (the same given) coming Sunday, Mamelodi Sundowns entertain Baroka FC in Dobsonville stadium at 18h00. They seal the end of the season with the Northern stars:

• away to Polokwane City in Loftus Verfeld stadium on Sep. 2;
• and home to Black Leopards in Dobsonville stadium on Sep. 5 at 15h30.

Sundowns too, will not find their final fixtures easy too. Because both City and Leopards are waging a war of their own for survival in the league.
