South Africa reaches 5, 000 deaths for Covid-19 on Sunday, July 19.

Today – The Department of Health announced 85 new patients who died as a result of the novel coronavirus. The latest death figures take the country’s tally to 5, 033.

The situation is getting dire as the total number of confirmed cases reach 364, 328 with no ceasing on the tenuous horizon. 

Having the highest number of infections in Africa by far, SA lies 5th in the world behind Russia (4th), India (3rd), Brazil (2nd) and the United States of America (1st).

In the South African context, Covid-19 cases shot-up after the relaxation of lockdown regulations in May.

For the most part, official reported deaths were in their single digits (units) and cases in tens (double digits). Obedience for strict controls was non-negotiable then. No more.

The viral explosion of this severe epidemic has earned the government of the day some vitriolic criticism. What with the flip-flopping around sector openings and closures! The dawn of each wintery day is  greeted by confusing messages to the utter outrage of the citizenry.

The country bellows for visionary stewardship that is honest in its moral compass and executive design. A proactive government that is consistent in strategy with a tinge of fluidity owing to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic.

The citizens, too, must rally. And should rally. Voluntarily so. But the Minister of Health Dr. Zweli Mkhize has registered a heartfelt plea to the entire nation as relates to heeding and adherence to government regulations.
