South Africa finds itself at the crossroads of managing the Covid-19 pandemic than it did two months ago. That is so because of the prevailing runaway climbing total number of infections across the country.

The government must decide whether to let the ravaging virus sweep the entire country in its wake or curtail some of the socio-economic activities to reduce the spreading scourge.

Tonight, President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation with regards to the prevail upswing of coronavirus cases and deaths tonight.

According to the Sunday Times, Ramaphosa is set to reintroduction regulations around alcohol sales, the number of passengers taxis can carry per load, interprovincial travels and curfews.

Provinces such as Gauteng and Eastern Cape lobbied the government to reinstate some of the stricter lockdown conditions.

A call for a rethink in school grades which have been brought back to contact classes. To offer health-care facilities some reprieve, an alcohol ban has been suggested. Others have appealed to communities to adhere to mandatory face masks and social distancing.

These are some of the measures advanced in a bid to limit the surge of the deadly pandemic.

Be that as it may, there are no easy answers. Reactivating restrictive economic activities will come at a steep cost though. Again, giving Covid-19 a free reign will expose many people to the highly contagious disease and ultimately lead to the potential loss of lives.

On Saturday, 13, 497 cases and 111 deaths were confirmed in South Africa. As it stands, there are 264, 184 infections and 3, 971 people have died so far. The latest total number of recovered patients is 127, 715.

Gauteng is the main hotspot for the overall Covid-19 of cases at 35.2% and 14,6% of those who lost their battle against the epidemic in this country.

Globally, SA is among the 10 top countries that have reported more coronavirus infections. Well over 12,8 million cases and 568, 000 deaths have been confirmed worldwide.
