Stellenbosch FC suffered a blow at home to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Absa Premiership league Wednesday night.

Still sweating from the CAF Champions League exit over the past weekend, the Brazilians somersaulted into the swing of the domestic fixtures with a victory albeit slender. Better still, Sundowns earned maximum points far away from home, Pretoria.

The title defending champions drew first blood just within 10 minutes from the starting blocks from kick-off. Themba Zwane whipped a cutback from Sibusiso Vilakazi into the back of the net to give the visitors advantage.

Soon after the goal, they pressed for the second. However, Stellies put out the fires and rallied to launch their foray surges few minutes before the break.

Notwithstanding all their offensive efforts, it all came to nothing. Upon their return for the second half, both clubs looked laboured.

Again, 10 minutes into the last 45 minutes, Lebogang Maboe wasted a glorious opportunity with a goalkeeper to beat.

Tonight’s game finished 1-0 and Sundowns’ tally went up to 44 points. They still have a game to play. Topping the league standings are Kaizer Chiefs on 48 points after 22 matches. The difference between them is just four points at the moment.

On Tuesday Mar. 17, Sundowns will host Orlando Pirates at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on their 22nd match of the 2019/20 season. That game will bring the Brazilians on par with Chiefs’ games played at this point.

Yet again, that game, without a doubt, may become the watershed moment to indicate where the title might wind up.

For now, Chiefs still have a slight edge. Their meet in the final stretch with Sundowns might be the tiebreaker. Until then, the league title is still there for the taking.
