Ten-man Maritzburg pull a hard-fought equalizer

Jeremy Brockie breaks goal draught to earn Maritzburg a point at home.

Cape Town City FC took advantage of the 10-man Maritzburg United to register a one-goal [56′] lead in the second half of Absa Premiership league at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg (last) Friday night.

With one-player less, Eric Tinkler’s foot soldiers did not sit back. They took the fight to their visitors in a well-attended night encounter. It was to spot a difference between the two. Cape Town City were not given a free pass throughout the game in many areas except for the spur of the moment incisions.

Maritzburg’s Gabriel Nyoni was sent for an early [40′] shower for a foul on Peter Leeuwenburgh who was stretchered off the field and Sage Stephens came in his place. Leeuwenburgh’s injury added the night stress to Cape Town City after Kermit Erasmus pulled a hamstring very early [14′] in the league meeting.

The Team of Choice was rewarded for its steadfastness on the 73rd minute by a Jeremy Brockie who substituted Judas Moseamedi. Just six (6) minutes after introduction, Brockie pounced on a loose ball when Stephens, City’s goalkeeper, fumbled a cross into the 16-yard area. The New Zealanders found the back of the net for the first time since 2017, breaking his goal drought.

The Citizens squandered a rare win away from home and rued to see the lead slip away in uncharacteristic manner from their shot stopper. In all fairness, either side could have snatched a win toward the closing stage of the match.

Thabo Nodada scored the goal for the much improved Cape Town City FC. The match ended in a 1-1 thrilling deadlock. Both clubs are in the top eight to date.
