Spirited WAC Casablanca out to topple feisty Sundowns in Pretoria

The no-holds-barred battle for the top-of-the-table position in Group C draws closer.

Group C – Mamelodi Sundowns face-off Wydad (WAC) Casablanca of Morocco in the second-leg of the CAF Champions League (CL) on Saturday Feb. 1, 2020 at 15h00 South African (SA) time.

This afternoon’s remarkable fixture takes place at Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, a township located in the western side of Pretoria – City of Tshwane – SA. The first-leg of this continental showpiece ended in a goalless draw in Morocco Dec. 7, 2019. The duel was relatively even.

Sundowns top the group with 11 points from five fiercely contested games. The main objective is to pull-out all barriers and stay and finish atop, said Pitso Mosimane, Sundowns head coach. He reiterated the importance of the cup and that it is every club’s dream to nick it.

The Moroccans lie second with nine (9) points after five competitive matches. Two clubs out of the four in a group will qualify for the CL quarterfinals. A top-of-the-group finish is often associated with avoiding the continent’s super clubs.  If anything, the Sundowns-WAC tie will be an exhilarating affair.

The USM Alger (4th) tie against Atlético Petróleos or Petro de Luanda (3rd) in Algeria at 15h00 is purely academic. Their outcomes are inconsequential to the duo above, much less on the other groups (A, B & D).

While Alger have collated only two points, the Angolans managed a meagre three (points) in five games played so far. Today’s round six (6) of the Champions League matchecompletes the group stages.
