It was a night the Pretoria side Mamelodi Sundowns will hate to remember in Soweto and one Orlando Pirates will cherish for as long as it lasts in the top flight football, the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

The potential champions of the 2019/20 Absa Premiership league competition seems to be standing out from the pack per each passing game in the second round of the PSL.

More than ever before this season, Kaizer Chiefs (with a 9-point lead at the top) must be subliminally sensing victory. They too are now well aware that the title might be theirs to let slip albeit the over ten matches yet to be played.

Sundowns dropped three valuable points at Orlando Stadium to Pirates in Soweto Wednesday night Jan. 15. The biggest midweek PSL tie ended on 1-0 score margin. The whole Orlando was in raptures when the final whistle brought the game to a grinding stop.

The Buccaneers’ only goal of the night out in Soweto came against the run of play through Gabadinho Mhango [30] in the first half. Although Sundowns dominated and dictated the pace of the game, Pirates emerged tops, thanks to their clinical finish from a counter-attack play.

Josef Zinnbauer said they were very lucky to beat a well-oiled team like Sundowns. Pirates are a good team but are still very much in a construction phase.

The Brazilians hit the upright no less than twice in the league game. Head coach Pitso Mosimane rued the squandered chances but commented that they were unfortunate under the Soweto sky night in Johannesburg.
