Rarely do first-division promotion clubs fancy their chances against perennial elite league contenders. In their massive clash with the log leaders, Stellenbosch FC have it all to do Wednesday tonight against a wounded Kaizer Chiefs club over the past weekend. The Soweto giant is still reeling from the shocking Telkom Knockout (TKO) Cup exit in the semi-final at the hands of the lowly rated Maritzburg United on the past Sunday. They travel to the coast and go into tonight’s fixture as unparalleled favourites. The Cape Town side has to delve deep to fend off the seeming potential title winners by 2019/20 season end.
There are five (5) Absa Premiership league matches tonight, Nov. 27, 2019. They all start at 19h30.
Stellenbosch FC vs Kaizer Chiefs
With heavy hearts from missing out on the TKO Cup final, Kaizer Chiefs are in Cape Town tonight. They play a hard-to-beat Stellenbosch FC in a league action at Cape Town Stadium.
The Stellies‘ season in top flight football did not begin well. However, they have won two matches and managed five draws to place them precariously at position 14 on the league table. With the home backing, they are expected to come out guns blazing tonight.
Amakhosi will be aiming to extend their current lead with 28 points at the summit post 11 games. In the aftermath of the shock exit by Maritzburg in the TKO Cup semi-final the past weekend, they surely will be very vigilant away in Cape Town.
As far as the championship goes, Chiefs will not let slip their 7-point advantage on the log. They too, are fully aware after missing out on the 2019 MTN Top 8 showpiece and the TKO elimination. There is still the Nedbank Cup to contest for in 2020. Even that too, does not hold much promise after succumbing to lower-level division TS Galaxy in the 2019 Nedbank Cup edition.
The previous few seasons in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) have been very unkind for Chiefs. It goes without saying that they are gunning for the 2019/20 championship with their all-top stars.
Ernest Middendorp, Chiefs head coach, will hate to drop maximum points, let alone to the Stellies. More so at the back of a Mamelodi Sundowns’ win last night that has effectively reduced their 10-point edge to seven at the apex of the league table.
The Stellies need maximum points to have a chance to survive the spine-chilling relegation chop. For that matter, every game counts for Stellenbosch. And they too are well aware of it.
